Heat pump installation in Birmingham
An honest verdict on your house first, then a fixed price from an MCS certified Birmingham installer with the grant taken off.
Which Birmingham homes suit a heat pump?
The interwar semis that fill much of suburban Birmingham are often the strongest candidates: cavity walls, a garden for the outdoor unit and an airing cupboard for the cylinder. Victorian terraces nearer the centre can work too, but solid walls and small yards make the job harder and may mean larger radiators. Flats in tower blocks are usually the wrong fit.
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme gives £7,500 off an air source heat pump. Your MCS-certified installer claims it and takes it off your bill.
Victorian and Edwardian red brick terraces: The small back yard is usually the only spot for the outdoor unit, so measure it before anything else. Solid nine inch walls mean bigger radiators are likely.
Interwar semis in the outer suburbs: Usually one of the better candidates in the city, with a side path or garden for the unit and room for a cylinder. Cavity walls and a well-insulated loft help a lot.
Tower blocks and city-centre apartments: An individual heat pump is rarely practical without a balcony or outdoor space, and the freeholder must agree.

Heat pump installation in Birmingham: questions
What will a heat pump cost me in Birmingham?
Before any grant, an air source heat pump typically costs £11,000 to £14,500 installed. The £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant normally brings that to about £3,500 to £7,000. Any radiator changes are listed in your fixed quote so nothing is added later.
Is my Birmingham semi a good fit?
Often, yes. If the cavity walls are filled and the loft is insulated, a heat pump running at a low flow temperature (the temperature of the water sent to the radiators) can keep it warm. The survey checks each room's heat loss and whether any radiators need upsizing.
Can a Birmingham terrace with a tiny yard take the outdoor unit?
It needs a spot with clear airflow, usually against the back wall of the yard or the rear of the house. It must also meet the distance rules for permitted development. If there is no workable spot, we will tell you that a new boiler is the better choice.
Do I have to apply for the grant myself?
No. Your MCS certified installer applies on your behalf and the £7,500 comes off your bill. To qualify you need a valid EPC and to be replacing a fossil fuel system such as a gas boiler.
